Burglars increasingly use illegal cell jammers to disable security systems
Cell jamming attempts are on the rise and in the headlines. Security dealers and integrators who keep up with emerging changes in the industry are taking note and educating their customers about this growing threat.
In June, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released a statement warning about the rise of illegal cell jammers being brought into the United States. They revealed a startling statistic: “Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has seen a roughly 830% increase in seizures since 2021.”
These illegal devices are being used to defeat alarm system communications, allowing thieves to enter compromised facilities undetected. When jammed, cellular alarm signals never make it to the monitoring center and no authorities are dispatched.
DHS reported a list of states being heavily impacted by cell jammers, which include Florida, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Vermont and Virginia. Local news outlets quickly began spreading the message for increased awareness.
A few high-profile incidents have made national news this summer. On June 29, a burglary crew targeting jewelry stores was apprehended after being investigated for weeks, effectively using cell jammers as part of their strategy. In July, the New York Post featured an interview with security experts in Hollywood, criticizing the vulnerability of high profile homes and the desperate need for tighter security solutions to address the effectiveness of cell jammers.
In response to these concerns, a leading manufacturer in the security industry, Digital Monitoring Products (DMP), has introduced a revolutionary new device that detects when cellular frequencies are being jammed. JamAlert™ instantly notifies the control panel when cellular communication is being compromised. By detecting cellular jamming on multiple frequencies, it offers a way to mitigate potential losses.
This groundbreaking device also made headlines this summer, being awarded Best in Show at ESX’s 2025 Innovation Awards and turning heads at ISC West, where it was previewed earlier this year.
“JamAlert is positioned to make a huge impact in the industry,” added Jon Adams, vice president of sales at DMP. “The fact that it works with DMP and non-DMP panels offers a wide variety of applications. It’s a security system for your security system.”
